Investigation of acute toxicity of cadmium-arsenic mixtures to Daphnia magna with toxic units approach

چکیده
Th e acute toxicities of cadmium chloride (CdCl2.H2O), arsenic trioxide (AS2O3), and their mixtures to Daphnia magna were investigated by employing the statistical method of aquatic toxicity. Th e data obtained were statistically evaluated with probit analysis method (SPSS 17.0). Th e 24 h LC50 of Cd and As to Daphnia magna was estimated to be 44 μg L−1 for Cd, and 509 μg L−1 for As, respectively. With Behrens-Karber method the 24 h LC50 of these metals was found to be 46 μg L−1 and 509 μg L−1, respectively. Th e 2 methods were in good agreement. Th e results suggested that D. magna is more sensitive to the 90% Cd + 10% As mixture than either metal alone. Toxic units (TUs) and additional index (AI) showed that all mixtures were synergistic.

Evaluation of Baffle Fixes Film up Flow Sludge Blanket Filtration (BFUSBF) System in Treatment of Wastewaters from Phenol and 2,4-Dinitrophenol Using Daphnia Magna Bioassay
Background: Phenol and nitrophenol are common compounds found in different types of industrial wastewater known as serious threats to human health and natural environment. In this study, Daphnia magna was used to evaluate the effectiveness of "baffle fixes film up flow sludge blanket filtration" (BFUSBF) system in elimination of phenolic compounds from water. Methods: D. magna cult...
متن کاملEvaluation of silver nanoparticles toxicity in Daphnia magna: Comparison of chemical and green biosynthetic productions
Recently nanoparticles, particularly silver nanoparticles, are broadly used in industry, hence the contamination of the environment with AgNPs has caused considerable concern. In this study, the toxicity of biosynthetic nanosilver produced by two macroalgae: Sargassum boveanum and Ulva flexuosa extracts were compared with chemical nanosilver in Daphnia magna. Size and quality of nanoparticles e...
متن کاملAcute toxicity of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in Daphnia magna and Pontogammarus maeoticus
Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nTiO2) are the world's second most widely consumed nanomaterial and large quantities of this material enters the aquatic ecosystem annually. Therefore, understanding the effects of nTiO2 on aquatic organisms is very important. The present study used Daphnia magna as a model freshwater organism and Pontogammarus maeoticus as a brackish water organism to evaluate s...
متن کاملA test of the additivity of acute toxicity of binary-metal mixtures of ni with Cd, Cu, and Zn to Daphnia magna, using the inflection point of the concentration-response curves.
Mixtures of metals are often present in surface waters, leading to toxicity that is difficult to predict. To provide data for development of multimetal toxicity models, Daphnia magna neonates were exposed to individual metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Zn) and to binary combinations of those metals in standard 48-h lethality tests conducted in US Environmental Protection Agency moderately hard reconstituted ...
متن کاملSurvey of indicator toxicity of Isfahan south of wastewater treatment plant by using of daphnia magna
Introduction: Bioassay is necessary for assessment of pollution. Because physical and chemical taste are not enough for assessment of potential effects on water ecosystem. Bioassay tests have alot of scientific value inanition doing of them is easy and need less time, also need less space, laboratory equipment’s and expenditure. Therefor such tests have found special attention in water pollutio...
